Appropriate infection control in the dental office setting is essential to prevent the transmission of diseases. In California, the regulations on minimum infection control are administered by the California Dental Board. This course will address the potential routes of transmission for pathogens, the chain of infection and how this can be broken. Personal protective equipment, immunizations, instrument processing, and the treatment of clinical contact and housekeeping surfaces are discussed, as well as the treatment of sharps, dental unit water lines and impressions.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

 

The overall goal of this course is to provide the participant with information on the infection control regulations and requirements in the State of California. Upon completion of this course, the participant will:

  • Review the minimum infection control standards required by the California Dental Board
  • Describe the most current rule on blood-borne pathogens from Cal/OSHA
  • Identify instrument processing requirements and the required protocol for the different categories of instruments
  • Review the best practices and California requirements for the disposal of sharps and contaminated waste
  • Locate the resource/web site for the California Dental Practice Act and updates.

Eve Cuny, MS

Eve Cuny is the Director of Environmental Health and Safety and Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Medicine at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. She has consulted with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Dental Association, California OSHA, California Dental Board and other agencies on issues related to safety and infection control in dentistry. She has presented over 100 continuing education programs throughout the world and published numerous articles and textbooks. Ms. Cuny is also founder and managing partner of Eve Cuny Consultants, LLC, a consulting group specializing in product evaluation, professional writing and other services to the dental profession and industry.
